University of Texas at Arlington Parking and Transportation Department Announces New Parking Rates

The University of Texas at Arlington's Parking and Transportation Department (PATS) is committed to providing affordable and efficient services to our campus community. However, due to a variety of factors, we must implement parking permit rate increases for the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years, to take effect beginning Aug. 1, 2023.

The most common employee and student permits will increase $2 per month. Additionally, the hourly rate for on-street parking will increase by $0.25 per hour and the daily rate will increase by $1 per day.

We understand the importance of offering more economical options to ensure accessibility. Reduced-rate and remote parking permit options will have smaller increases that range from $1 to $1.50 per month. These options provide an alternative for individuals seeking more budget-friendly choices to better suit their parking needs.

Why Are Rates Increasing?

The decision to increase parking rates was made with considerable forethought. PATS is considered an auxiliary unit of the University and relies solely on revenue generated through its services to cover operating costs. It does not receive any tuition dollars from students. While PATS rates have not increased since 2018 for students and 2019 for employees, inflation, rising maintenance costs, increased operational expenses, and changes in parking revenue forecast models post-pandemic have necessitated an adjustment to meet required expenditures, service expectations, and increased operating costs.

Revenue generated from the permit rate increases will be allocated toward several priorities and initiatives that directly benefit drivers on campus. These include:

  1. Generating necessary funds for parking lot maintenance, repair, and internal loan repayment.
  2. Funding increased transportation-related costs, expanded service levels, and improved rider-facing technology. Operational costs and market rates for bus drivers have increased. These funds will support expanded transportation services, improved technology, and enhanced customer experience.
  3. Building a campus parking guidance ecosystem to maximize efficiency and provide traffic and parking information. This will help optimize unused parking spaces, reduce congestion, and improve traffic flow through real-time information on availability.
  4. Annual contribution to reserves to meet the minimum operating reserve and debt service requirements.

PATS is focused on providing quality service and good value. UTA's parking rates remain some of the lowest when compared to peer institutions. We have consistently maintained these lower rates through strategic initiatives that ensure the dollars spent provide meaningful value to the UTA community.
